About the position

We are seeking a Managing Director to join our team, reporting directly to the Chief Underwriting Officer of Construction. This pivotal role is designed for an individual contributor who will lead and develop the financial management and operating routines for our national portfolios of project business. The ideal candidate will possess a robust understanding of the underwriting process and demonstrate the ability to build and maintain relationships with various stakeholders, including agents, brokers, and insureds. As the portfolio leader, you will hold one of the highest levels of authority within the organization, collaborating with the leadership team to enhance our acumen and expand our wrap-up book of business. In this role, you will engage with executive leadership to identify and frame strategic issues, driving the planning and execution of program initiatives. Your contributions will significantly impact our financial results, employee engagement, and long-term customer value. You will serve as a collaborative expert, working closely with both experienced and less experienced colleagues to build expertise across the unit. Additionally, you will partner with the Middle & Large Commercial (MLC) Office of the Chief Underwriting Officer (OCUO) and Enterprise Field Leaders to accelerate the growth of our book of business while establishing a credible presence within the industry and fostering a risk-embracing culture. Your responsibilities will include indirect leadership over the Wrap-Up underwriting team, engaging with Construction Regional Vice Presidents to enable risk decisions, and training and empowering the underwriting team. You will also collaborate with product, actuarial, service, and claims teams to ensure the success of our external distribution and client base. This role requires a strategic mindset and the ability to develop and maintain operating routines that drive profitability and compliance with The Hartford’s guidelines and policies.

Responsibilities
? Lead and develop financial management and operating routines for national portfolios of project business.

? Own the development and execution of operating routines across the Wrap-Up unit in partnership with the leadership team.

? Monitor profit, pricing adequacy, loss cost trends, and outlook targets across assigned territories.

? Engage with other directors and Underwriting Officers to ensure seamless execution of underwriting initiatives.
,
? Implement underwriting strategies, including pricing, models, and geography.
,
? Provide input to overall Middle Market underwriting and product training agendas.
,
? Develop execution strategies for achievement of operating plan commitments.
,
? Advance portfolio management initiatives by partnering with various internal teams.
,
? Establish and maintain close partnerships with Product and Actuary to inform business actions on pricing trends.

? Develop meaningful partnerships and shared vision for business outcomes.
,
? Empower teams to make sound risk decisions and provide thought leadership to product initiatives.
,
? Lead strategic profit improvement initiatives as needed.
,
? Engage externally to enhance sales culture and support portfolio consolidation opportunities.
,
? Develop and nurture wrap-up strategic alliances with distribution partners and clients.
,
? Partner with other business leaders to define countrywide distribution strategies.

? Provide input to underwriting strategies with specific distribution partners as needed.

? Lead talent management initiatives and champion DEI in all operating routines.

Requirements
? Bachelor’s degree required; CPCU or other relevant industry designation preferred.

? 8+ years of Commercial P&C insurance industry experience required, with expertise in underwriting loss sensitive and Wrap-ups.

? Strong industry reputation as both a technical and externally facing market leader.
